In the Spring Break, we spoke with Lorenzo Eterovic-Funcic, who has a team in Formula Sprint 1, LEF Autoracing. He discusses the challenges of being a new team with Toby Davis.
Formula Sprint 1 restarts tonight, and the teams and drivers are excited to get going again. Some of them, like Malta Force, have had things their own way, and have been able to dominate rounds and take multiple victories. However, when joining the career ladder as a new team, it can be very difficult to get a foothold on the championship.
Speaking with Lorenzo was interesting; he had realistic visions for where his team could end up, but also a humble reflection on how the team has competed so far. 'Saying that it's our first season on the career ladder would be too easy of an excuse. We've not performed to the best of our abilities yet and are way off of where I think we can realistically be, which is on the cusp of the top 7. We as a team overall, drivers engineers and myself have the capabilities to reach that goal, but we have more than once been unlucky.'
He was able to recall all of the incidents and problems the team has had so far, saying 'Sven getting a double dnf at Istanbul, Lorenzo Turri having connection issues at feature races at both Barcelona and Indianapolis, as well as P2P not functioning in the Indianapolis sprint race, and the many times Alexander was involved in incidents outside of his powers or concern has been very detrimental to our overall points tally.'
He does see some positives too, however, and is keen to point them out. 'That's not to mention we haven't gotten some good results too, like Sven's podium in the Melbourne feature race, but we are a team that can definitely score points more consistently, and that's something we're aiming to do coming back from the spring break.'
Finally, I asked him what he thought might happen towards the end of the season in FS1 as a whole. Lorenzo said '...It is a matter that doesn't particularly concern me, although I think it's been fairly obvious from the results we've seen so far that the Malta Force and Team Shiba guys are the pack to beat, and that Apex GP and HGP are most of the time the ones who do it, although that's not to say I don't expect other teams to have their spotlight soon.'
